Researchers unveiled an ultra-flexible near-infrared vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) aimed at improving skin-friendly photoplethysmography (PPG) monitoring, with details published as an upcoming work in npj Flexible Electronics. The platform is designed to enable more comfortable, reliable measurement for non-invasive cardiovascular monitoring. PPG is a common wearable technique that estimates blood volume changes from light absorption. The new laser design targets skin compatibility constraints that can limit signal quality and user comfort in real-world wearables. For product and device developers, the enabling piece is the coupling of flexible optics with clinically relevant signal acquisition, which could extend adoption for continuous monitoring applications.
