Moderna is developing an investigational mRNA vaccine against Bundibugyo virus with CEPI funding to enable early human trials. The effort is aimed at addressing a gap in available vaccines for specific Ebola virus species linked to the current Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda outbreak. Moderna and CEPI said the program is designed to move quickly toward a phase 1 safety trial within months, subject to regulatory review. CEPI committed up to $60 million to develop three Bundibugyo vaccine candidates using different platforms, including Moderna’s mRNA approach, an IAVI recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus vector program, and a University of Oxford candidate manufactured by the Serum Institute of India using the ChAdOx platform. CEPI deputy CEO Aurélia Nguyen said resources were mobilized just over two weeks after the outbreak announcement in mid-May, following consultations with WHO, Africa CDC, Gavi, and affected countries.
