Researchers at the University of Michigan Engineering reported preclinical results for a yeast-based universal influenza vaccine candidate designed to target a conserved influenza protein. The approach used genetically engineered baker’s yeast to generate virus-like particles displaying the slow-changing target. In mouse studies, the vaccine protected animals against multiple influenza strains, according to the report. The work aims to address a core limitation of seasonal influenza shots, which often focus on hemagglutinin regions that evolve over time. While the findings remain early, they add to a growing set of “universal flu” strategies focused on conserved epitopes and longer-lasting immune memory.
