United Therapeutics agreed to pay $140 million upfront to acquire Thymmune Therapeutics, a preclinical-stage regenerative cell therapy company focused on restoring thymic function. The deal includes up to $160 million in milestone payments tied to clinical and regulatory progress through 2031. Thymmune’s approach converts human-induced pluripotent stem cells into thymic cells, aiming to mature into lineages that reconstitute T-cell function. Its lead program, THY-100, is in preclinical development for congenital athymia, an ultra-rare condition linked to fatal infections and immune dysregulation. The acquisition also signals United’s intent to explore broader indications beyond congenital athymia, including transplant tolerance and immune-mediated diseases, using thymic regeneration as a platform. Given the historical mortality risk in congenital athymia and the precedent set by United’s Rethymic (culture-expanded thymus tissue implant), this purchase positions United to compete on scalability and manufacturing potential while extending a strategic area in immunology.
