UK Biobank said researchers will be able to resume using its datasets months after a massive breach halted access. The platform was shut down after medical data tied to 500,000 patients was reportedly listed for sale on an Alibaba-owned e-commerce site. In an October 22 update, CEO Rory Collins said an independent cybersecurity firm verified the Research Analysis Platform was secure. Restoration is now contingent on agreement from the UK government and national health data controllers, with a phased reintroduction planned. The biobank will run manual output checks through 2026 for a small group of users before switching to automated checking in 2027. The update matters for biotech teams relying on large-scale human genomics and imaging datasets because it affects both timeline and data-governance requirements.
