A laboratory coculture study found that neutrophils can reshape energy metabolism in a triple-negative breast cancer microenvironment model, shifting mitochondrial activity and altering metabolic readouts compared with cancer and fibroblast monocultures. The work used a controlled coculture system with donor-derived neutrophils and reported metabolic changes consistent with a pro-inflammatory, tumor-mimicking environment. As a hypothesis-generating preclinical model, the study underscores how immune-cell recruitment and neutrophil function may drive metabolic rewiring—an area increasingly linked to therapeutic response and resistance strategies. Additional validation will be needed across models and patient-derived systems before clinical implications can be drawn.
