A collagen-targeted protein MRI contrast agent from Georgia State University detected invasive lung tumors and multi-organ metastases as small as 1 millimeter in preclinical tests, and the team is pursuing FDA clinical testing. By targeting extracellular-matrix collagen signals, the approach aims to improve detection sensitivity for early lesions and occult spread. If translated successfully, collagen-directed imaging could complement existing oncologic PET strategies and help surgical planning where lesion size and accessibility limit biopsy options. The preclinical scope means clinical sensitivity and specificity remain unproven in humans, but the work sets a clear translational pathway toward first-in-human evaluation.
