HelixWings unveiled an AI-guided enzyme redesign platform that enables two P450 enzymes to use a low-cost biomimetic cofactor, NMNH, in place of more expensive natural cofactors. The engineered enzymes showed catalytic efficiency increases of up to 404% compared with wild type. The platform is designed to reduce cost and expand the feasibility of industrial biocatalysis by engineering enzyme-cofactor compatibility around inexpensive substitutes. If the performance translates beyond current lab conditions, it could simplify supply-chain constraints in synthesis workflows. The report positions HelixWings’ work as an engineering solution to a core manufacturing barrier: cofactor cost and availability. For process development teams, the next step will be assessing stability, turnover under industrial conditions, and compatibility with existing reactor designs and downstream purification.
