A multicenter phase II study in Japan reported that preoperative chemotherapy using docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil enabled most patients with HPV-linked oropharyngeal cancer to avoid postoperative radiotherapy and chemoradiotherapy. Published in the British Journal of Cancer, the neoadjuvant approach suggests a de-escalation option for a substantial subset. If validated in longer follow-up and in broader populations, the results could reduce treatment burden while preserving disease control. The study adds to the ongoing trend of risk-adapted de-intensification in HPV-associated head and neck cancers.
