A new approach described in a preclinical/clinical study uses noninvasive acoustic assessment to measure feeding skills in preterm infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). The work targets a practical bottleneck: oral feeding difficulties that can prolong hospital stays by delaying safe feeding and swallowing–breathing coordination. Rather than relying on touch or invasive sensors, the bedside method aims to capture feeding-related dynamics via sound patterns, which could support earlier intervention and more consistent monitoring. If validated in broader cohorts, the approach may reduce dependence on specialized equipment and help standardize feeding assessments across neonatal intensive care units.
