Japan’s Teijin and Teijin Regenet teamed with Shinshu University Hospital to create a joint research agreement focused on manufacturing technologies for cell and gene therapy products, including CAR T. The collaboration targets automation, efficiency improvements, and quality testing methods to strengthen Japan’s cell and gene therapy manufacturing base. The program uses Shinshu University Hospital’s Cell Processing Center to explore future manufacturing automation and to build practical knowledge around quality control and quality testing technologies. For the industry, the move addresses a bottleneck that can cap clinical and commercial throughput: manufacturing capacity and skilled labor. Institutional partnerships like this are a lever for expanding access without waiting for incremental capacity additions across a single CDMO network.
