Cutting-edge studies have revealed that small cell lung cancer (SCLC) cells establish functional, synapse-like connections with neurons both in the lung and brain metastases. These electrophysiological interfaces facilitate tumor progression by integrating cancer cells into neural circuits. This discovery challenges traditional views of tumor microenvironments and opens new avenues for targeting neural-cancer interactions therapeutically, potentially disrupting a novel mechanism underlying cancer aggressiveness and metastasis.
