The FDA approved Scholar Rock’s Isembyld (sponsored as a therapy targeting muscle loss in spinal muscular atrophy) for adults and children aged 2 and older who are already receiving SMN2-targeting treatments. The decision follows late-stage data showing that, when used alongside SMN2-directed therapy, Isembyld improved motor skills over one year compared with placebo. The approval adds a new therapeutic mechanism to SMA care by targeting muscle loss rather than the SMN2 biology alone. It also sets expectations for future combination strategies and real-world adoption in a population that has increasingly benefited from earlier intervention.
