A retrospective study of sepsis patients found calprotectin and dynamic troponin T change were independently associated with sepsis-induced myocardial injury, with only modest improvement in discrimination when both were used together. Troponin kinetics remained a key signal in the analysis. The work reinforces that myocardial injury in sepsis is not one-dimensional—immune activation markers such as calprotectin can add information even when troponin change already captures much of the risk structure. However, combining biomarkers did not produce a large step-change in performance. Clinically, that suggests near-term adoption may focus on existing troponin workflows while selectively exploring calprotectin for stratification where additional clarity is needed.
