Researchers reported that stromal cell–derived factor 4 (SDF4) could help diagnose systemic lupus erythematosus and potentially track disease severity. In BMC Immunology analyses, SDF4 levels were higher in SLE samples than in healthy controls, and serum SDF4 showed strong discrimination with an area under the curve of 0.954 in distinguishing SLE from controls. The results position SDF4 as a biomarker that could refine diagnostic and severity assessment workflows, though the study’s clinical utility will depend on external validation, assay standardization, and performance against existing serologic markers.
