Ionis Pharmaceuticals has won FDA approval for Zanvastro, the first disease-modifying therapy for Alexander disease. The agency approved the antisense therapy for children and adults after a pivotal trial maintained walking speed in treated patients while controls declined by 33%. The study also showed hints that earlier treatment in young children may improve motor function beyond stabilization. Safety signals were generally manageable, with serious adverse events more frequent in the control arm.
