Asahi Kasei Therapeutics received FDA approval for Hovilpri, a new oral treatment for lesions caused by herpes simplex virus infection. The approval follows Asahi Kasei’s acquisition of AiCuris Anti-Infective Cures earlier this year for about $919 million, positioning the acquired asset as the next commercial driver. The approval extends Asahi Kasei’s portfolio within antivirals and adds an additional mechanism and formulation approach in a market still dominated by older nucleos(t)ide analogs. For formulators and commercial planners, the key near-term question will be uptake dynamics—particularly whether the once-daily pill format differentiates against current standard-of-care workflows. The deal structure and now the regulator-backed endpoint suggest the acquirer’s thesis was centered on deliverable clinical/regulatory milestones rather than longer-term R&D uncertainty.
