Thermo Fisher Scientific received FBI National DNA Index System (NDIS) approval for its Applied Biosystems RapidIntel Plus cartridge used with the RapidHit ID system for rapid DNA profiling of qualifying forensic samples. The company said the FBI’s approval enables eligible law enforcement workflows to search resulting DNA profiles against CODIS when all requirements are met. Thermo Fisher framed the NDIS clearance as a way to shorten investigations from days or weeks to hours by producing DNA profiles earlier in the investigative process. The company noted that accredited labs and qualified personnel must still review and interpret the results before any CODIS search or upload. The approval is positioned as complementary to existing forensic laboratory procedures rather than a replacement, and Thermo Fisher said it previously received NDIS approval for a whole-genome panel workflow. For life sciences suppliers, the development highlights continued demand for faster, standardized molecular diagnostics in regulated environments with government database linkages.
