Roche subsidiary Foundation Medicine rebranded Saga Diagnostics’ minimal residual disease test as FoundationOne MRD after acquiring Saga for $595 million earlier in 2026. The updated branding reflects a broader effort to expand MRD applications beyond the test’s original breast cancer use case. The assay uses patient tissue to perform whole-genome sequencing, selects structural variants into a patient-specific “fingerprint,” and then applies digital PCR to circulating tumor DNA. Foundation Medicine said structural variants may provide more stable tracking than point mutation–only approaches, while digital PCR supports speed and cost. The change could affect adoption decisions among clinical labs that are evaluating MRD workflows for post-treatment surveillance and trial stratification.
