Researchers reported that kidneys can be preserved for days using a device that cools organs to -4°C without ice formation, then successfully transplanted into pigs after rewarming. The approach, developed by Matthew Powell Palm at Texas A&M and colleagues, is aimed at extending preservation time beyond conventional cold storage limits. In the pig model work, organs preserved using the supercooling device performed better than kidneys stored on ice, with the key enabling factor being prevention of ice crystal damage during cooling. The team positioned the technology as a potential response to the organ shortage and discarding rates driven by transport time and degradation. For the healthcare biotech ecosystem, the study adds to the growing innovation pipeline around organ preservation platforms that could enable broader transplant access and reduce wastage of donated organs.
