A new saliva-based biomarker strategy is being advanced for oral potentially malignant disorders, with reported links between oral precancer status and clinical outcomes. The study, led by Chen and colleagues, focused on patients with oral potentially malignant disorders where progression risk is often hard to gauge. By developing a noninvasive testing approach, the work targets earlier detection and improved prognosis stratification in oral potentially malignant disorders. Saliva sampling can reduce patient burden compared with repeated tissue biopsies, potentially enabling more frequent monitoring. The next step for the field will be prospective validation and establishing performance characteristics across lesion types and clinical settings.
