A new oral antiviral candidate, GHP-88310, blocked transmission of a measles-like virus in a ferret model, according to results published in Nature Microbiology. The study, led from Georgia State University’s Plemper lab, reported that dosing before or after exposure reduced clinical symptoms and prevented airborne spread. The findings position GHP-88310 as a candidate to complement ring vaccination strategies by shortening infectious windows and interrupting contact-mediated and airborne transmission. With measles case counts elevated in the US, the work adds to the urgency for outpatient-deployable antivirals that can be used quickly during outbreaks.
