Opentrons raised $40 million in a Series E to expand its robotics, software, and data infrastructure, betting on AI-driven experimental execution and “autonomous science” workflows. The round was led by Avego with additional investment from BroadOak Capital Partners. The company said it will use the funding to extend automation capabilities, invest in AI-driven experimental execution, and broaden integration across its robots and instruments. Opentrons also plans to accelerate protocol development through software and AI and expand into new markets. Opentrons reports deploying over 11,000 robots across more than 80 countries and points to earlier moves with NVIDIA platforms for training data related to physical AI-enabled laboratory robotics. The financing adds momentum to the lab-automation stack that underpins pharmaceutical and biotech experimentation, where faster protocol iteration and usable data generation can reduce cycle times for discovery and development.
