Opentrons raised $40 million in a Series E round led by Avego, with additional participation from BroadOak Capital Partners, to expand its robotics, software, and experimental data infrastructure. The company said the funding will scale AI-driven experimental execution and expand automation capabilities across its platform. A key element of the investment plan is deeper integration between AI tools and lab hardware so that systems can design, execute, and learn from scientific experiments. Opentrons also plans to accelerate protocol development via software and AI, while pushing into new markets and geographies. The company reported deploying more than 11,000 robots to laboratories across 80 countries, serving academic groups, diagnostic labs, and pharmaceutical customers. Earlier this year, Opentrons said it was using Nvidia’s Isaac and Cosmos platforms to generate training data for physical AI-enabled robotics. The financing further underscores investor demand for automation stacks that can generate usable data for drug development and other R&D workflows.
