International scientists developed an affordable, lyophilized reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) assay for pathogen detection aimed at resource-limited settings. The assay utilizes non-proprietary enzymes, eliminating reliance on costly commercial kits and cold chain logistics. Validation in Austria and Ghana demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity comparable to gold standard RT-qPCR testing for SARS-CoV-2. This open-source, stable, and scalable molecular test enables laboratories worldwide to independently conduct reliable pathogen surveillance and outbreak responses, addressing bottlenecks in diagnostics accessibility in low- and middle-income countries.
