Researchers report that low-frequency ultrasound can directly inhibit the migration of patient-derived oral cancer cells in vitro, pointing to a potential non-invasive therapy route for a high-burden disease. In Materials Today Bio, the team describes patient-derived oral cancer cells’ susceptibility to ~40 kHz mechano-stimulation, with reduced spreading and migration compared with healthy control cells. Mechanistically, the study links the effect to focal adhesion disruption, showing ultrasound lowers focal adhesion proteins that help tether the cytoskeleton to the extracellular matrix. A clinical translation path still requires in vivo validation, but the work provides initial mechanistic support for ultrasound-mediated tumor ablation.
