Eli Lilly said its triple-agonist retatrutide delivered weight loss results that set a new benchmark in Phase 3 for people with obesity and type 2 diabetes, supported by multi-measure improvements in cardiometabolic risk factors. In the TRIUMPH-2 trial (80 weeks; n=1,152), patients receiving the 12 mg dose lost an average of 49.6 pounds (22.5 kg), and about six in 10 participants no longer met criteria for obesity at the end of treatment. Lilly also reported dose-dependent improvements in blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure. Analysts and clinicians have long viewed “durability” and metabolic risk reduction as the key missing pieces behind earlier obesity candidates. Lilly framed the dataset as evidence the field can achieve substantially larger weight reductions than previously demonstrated across the GLP-1 and dual-agonist class. The Phase 3 readout intensifies competitive pressure as obesity developers race to differentiate on magnitude of weight loss, metabolic outcomes, and long-term tolerability.
