NIH announced the Bio Genesis Mission to accelerate biomedical research using artificial intelligence, nested within the broader Genesis Mission launched via an executive order. The initiative is supported by more than $5 billion in committed federal funds, with participating agencies contributing awards, funding opportunities, datasets, and research facilities. NIH said the initiative will address major National Science Technology Challenges, including forecasting complex biological systems, scaling biological manufacturing, strengthening national biosecurity, boosting pediatric cancer research, accelerating drug development, and identifying root causes of chronic disease. NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya said more than $1.2 billion in fiscal year 2026 funding has already been obligated, with additional allocations planned for fiscal year 2027. The stated approach includes cross-agency data infrastructure efforts, including longitudinal cohort access through HHS, chemical monitoring inputs from the Environmental Protection Agency, and compute resources from the Department of Energy aimed at training AI models for drug discovery and clinical translation.
