Freenome announced that an updated version of its SimpleScreen CRC blood test met primary and secondary endpoints in a clinical validation study, drawing mixed stakeholder reaction. The analysis used blinded, previously unevaluated samples from the company’s prospective PREEMPT CRC study and additional previously tested materials. Among 48,995 average-risk adults (ages 45–85) scheduled for screening colonoscopy across more than 200 sites, the test reported overall sensitivity of 80.4%. Sensitivity increased for advanced precancerous lesions compared with an earlier version—while overall sensitivity declined slightly—along with specificity of 90%, according to the company. Freenome projected gains in life-years and prevented cases and deaths versus the previous test version, positioning the update as an incremental step toward improving precancer detection. The company is also working toward a third test generation that expands target coverage.
