An experimental pipeline combined an antimicrobial strategy with a fast mucosal delivery concept: a dissolvable film engineered to deliver the PFOR-inhibiting antimicrobial amixicile into periodontal pockets. The film released over 95% of the drug within minutes and showed strong activity against key periodontal pathogens. The approach focuses on local exposure in an environment where biofilms and antibiotic penetration are persistent challenges. If translation hurdles are met, such dosage forms could become a platform for adjunctive treatment against difficult oral infections.
