Thailand launched a first-in-human Phase I/IIa basket trial, dubbed TARGETS, for autologous GD2-targeted CAR T cells in relapsed or refractory GD2-positive solid tumors. The study plans to enroll about 20 patients across multiple centers and will proceed as a single-arm design focusing first on safety and then exploratory anti-tumor activity. The protocol highlights neuroblastoma, glioma, and osteosarcoma among representative eligible cancers. GD2, a tumor-associated sugar (ganglioside), is used as a target because multiple aggressive childhood cancers express it, though solid-tumor performance has historically lagged hematologic indications. For the field, the trial’s launch shows continued investment in solid-tumor CAR T innovation beyond incremental optimization in existing targets. It also signals a regional expansion of advanced cell therapy clinical programs, which can speed enrollment for specific biomarker-defined populations. Key near-term questions will be toxicities typical to GD2 CAR approaches and whether the regimen demonstrates measurable responses in a small, diverse basket cohort.
