A landmark study led by Mohammed Bin Rashid University assembled the first high-quality pangenome reference for Arab populations using PacBio’s HiFi long-read sequencing technology. Analyzing genomes from 53 individuals across eight Arab countries, researchers identified over 111 million base pairs of previously unsequenced DNA, nearly 9 million small variants, and over 200,000 structural variants unique to these populations. Published in Nature Communications, this resource addresses underrepresentation in genomic databases and holds significant implications for precision medicine, rare disease diagnosis, and genetic diversity studies in historically understudied Arab populations.
