Eli Lilly agreed to acquire AtaiBeckley in a deal valued at up to $3.8 billion to broaden its neuroscience and mental health portfolio. The transaction adds AtaiBeckley’s BPL-003 (mebufotenin benzoate), a Phase III candidate for treatment-resistant depression that uses an intranasal synthetic form of 5-MeO-DMT. BPL-003 has received FDA Breakthrough Therapy designation, and AtaiBeckley previously reported positive Phase IIa data showing rapid and sustained reductions in MADRS scores in TRD patients on stable SSRI therapy. Analysts highlighted the program’s potential competitive positioning alongside existing treatment options. Lilly’s move reflects accelerating pharma interest in psychedelics-era mental health pipelines as companies seek differentiation in an increasingly crowded CNS landscape.
