An FDA advisory panel voted unanimously to support Moderna’s seasonal mRNA influenza vaccine candidate, mRNA-1010, advancing the product’s regulatory turnaround. The Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) concluded the benefits outweigh the risks for adults aged 50 to 64 by a 9-0 vote. The panel also backed the same risk-benefit conclusion for adults aged 65 and older, again by 9-0. Moderna is pursuing standard approval for the 50 to 64 group and an accelerated pathway for the older group, with an FDA decision expected Aug. 5. The briefing followed prior controversy in which earlier agency leadership declined to review the application after concerns about study controls. Moderna continues to position mRNA-1010 as an approach that can be rapidly updated for emerging strains.
