Moderna is pushing an investigational mRNA vaccine against the Bundibugyo virus species linked to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. The program received up to $50 million in support from CEPI and is designed to move into early human trials within months, subject to regulatory review and approvals. CEPI also committed up to $60 million to support three Bundibugyo vaccine candidates using different technologies, including Moderna’s mRNA approach, a candidate from IAVI using a recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus vector, and an Oxford/Serum Institute of India candidate using the ChAdOx platform. CEPI said it mobilized resources roughly two weeks after the outbreak was announced in mid-May, selecting candidates via a global review involving the World Health Organization, Africa CDC, Gavi, and affected countries. For outbreak preparedness, the update targets a key gap highlighted by prior Ebola vaccine availability—lack of protection across multiple Ebola virus species that can drive human disease.
