Researchers in the UK have reported the birth of eight healthy babies born using mitochondrial donation, an IVF technique involving DNA from three individuals—two parents and a mitochondrial donor. This method aims to prevent transmission of mitochondrial DNA diseases from mother to child. The technique received regulatory approval in the UK in 2015, with resultant babies showing normal development and no evidence of mitochondrial disease. Despite some infants showing low levels of mutations or minor health issues, this approach offers a promising option for preventing maternally inherited mitochondrial disorders.
