Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have utilized generative artificial intelligence (AI) to design novel antibiotic compounds targeting highly resistant bacteria such as Neisseria gonorrhoeae and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The AI models generated millions of unique molecules, from which structurally diverse candidates with novel mechanisms disrupting bacterial membranes were identified. This innovative strategy expands drug discovery beyond existing chemical libraries, opening avenues for addressing antibiotic resistance challenges worldwide.
