Olympus agreed to acquire BioProtect for $270 million to bolster its urology and oncology implant portfolio. BioProtect’s Balloon Spacer implant is designed to create space between the prostate and surrounding tissue during radiation therapy and biodegrades after treatment, and the company said it has been used in more than 11,000 procedures since launch. Olympus said the move supports its minimally invasive care strategy and extends its global reach, including relationships with healthcare professionals. The deal also arrives as Olympus continues expanding its treatment pathway with distribution agreements such as its early-month tie-up with EndoRobotics. For the prostate cancer care continuum, the acquisition can deepen Olympus’s ability to sell adjunctive devices alongside procedural and robotic offerings, potentially increasing penetration in radiotherapy workflows.
