United Therapeutics moved into thymus-focused cell therapy by agreeing to acquire Thymmune Therapeutics for $140 million upfront, with up to $160 million in milestones. The deal centers on THY-100, an iPSC-derived approach intended to create a “neo-thymus” and restore T-cell function in patients with congenital athymia. Thymmune’s technology converts human-induced pluripotent stem cells into thymic cells that could mature after administration. THY-100 is currently preclinical for congenital athymia, where United highlighted the historical severity of the condition and the high mortality seen without effective intervention. United said it plans to use the platform beyond athymia, with future development potentially spanning transplant tolerance and other immune-mediated indications, while also referencing United’s existing regenerative-cell and immunology ambitions.
