Eli Lilly agreed to acquire Austin, Texas-based 4E Therapeutics, extending its search for non-opioid pain relief that works outside the opioid paradigm. The deal price was not disclosed. The acquisition adds a preclinical-to-clinical pain program centered on MNK inhibitors, designed to target peripheral sensory neuron biology rather than suppress central pain signaling. 4E’s lead candidate, 4E T1103, is an oral MNK inhibitor that entered human testing after completing a Phase I safety study (NCT07586514). Lilly framed the science as an effort to intervene in the mechanisms that drive acute pain toward chronic suffering, specifically through the MNK–eIF4E pathway. The purchase follows a busy period for Lilly in M&A, including an earlier deal to acquire Orna Therapeutics for up to $2.4 billion and other recent acquisitions, as the company continues to build out multiple therapeutic franchises beyond its core oncology and immunology work.
