AbbVie reported that lutikizumab, its IL-1α/IL-1β inhibitor for hidradenitis suppurativa, succeeded in a Phase 3 trial but missed market expectations. In the Intrepid study, 31.4% of patients receiving weekly injections achieved the primary endpoint of 75% or greater reduction in inflamed bumps and abscesses at 16 weeks, versus 23.4% with placebo. AbbVie also reported that lutikizumab met eight secondary endpoints, including improvements in skin pain and flare control. The therapy was described as generally safe and well tolerated, with adverse event rates nearly matching placebo. Despite the efficacy signal, expert reaction framed the results as unlikely to match the bar set by the market’s expectations, particularly for a crowded therapeutic landscape and a condition where response depth and durability often drive preference. The Phase 3 readout keeps the IL-1 pathway in focus for chronic inflammatory skin disease, even as it highlights how differentiation beyond statistical significance is increasingly critical for commercial success.
