Researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center reported preclinical evidence that psilocybin can prevent chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) in mouse models. In studies published in Science, mice given two psilocybin doses prior to chemotherapy showed durable nerve protection across multiple treatment cycles while preserving tumor-killing effects. The work identified a neuroprotective mechanism involving serotonin receptors and mitochondrial trafficking preservation. The team positioned the approach as preventive rather than symptomatic, addressing the absence of proven strategies to stop established nerve injury from platinum-based regimens such as cisplatin. Clinically, the findings add momentum to continued evaluation of psychedelics as CNS-active agents with mechanistic targets relevant to oncology supportive care. The evidence may also shape how future trials define endpoint timing for nerve injury and functional impairment during chemotherapy exposure.
