Novartis licensed Alteogen’s ALT-B4 platform for subcutaneous drug delivery in a deal that could reach up to $3.2 billion. The arrangement, structured through option agreements, gives Novartis exclusive rights to develop and commercialize multiple products using ALT-B4 to convert eligible biologics into faster, patient-friendly subcutaneous regimens. ALT-B4 uses berahyaluronidase alfa to temporarily break down hyaluronan in the extracellular matrix, enabling co-administered drugs to disperse and absorb more rapidly. The deal expands the commercial footprint of ALT-B4, which has also been licensed previously by GSK and AstraZeneca, showing Big Pharma’s push toward alternative administration routes for biologics. For developers, the news reinforces that formulation and delivery technology is increasingly treated as strategic IP with major licensing budgets attached, not as a behind-the-scenes manufacturing detail.
