Alcon is expanding its cell therapy footprint by acquiring Neurotech Pharmaceuticals for $550 million, bringing the encapsulated retinal cell therapy Encelto into Alcon’s portfolio. The deal combines Alcon’s surgical retina presence with Neurotech’s platform technology behind the therapy. Encelto (revakinagene taroretcel-lwey) delivers recombinant human ciliary neurotrophic factor (rhCNTF) from an allogeneic cell implant positioned in the eye. Alcon highlighted Encelto’s FDA approval in March 2025 for macular telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel), which has previously lacked approved treatments. The transaction also continues Alcon’s acquisitive run after separating from Novartis, including prior retina and ophthalmology asset purchases. Alcon said the acquisition is designed to improve access to Encelto globally, leveraging its commercialization and manufacturing scale. For the sector, the deal underscores that “platform-like” cell therapies—especially implant-based approaches—are attracting strategic consolidation from large medtech players seeking durable differentiation in ophthalmology.
