Ipsen announced it will acquire Memo Therapeutics to add potravitug, a phase 2-ready monoclonal antibody targeting BK polyomavirus associated nephropathy in kidney transplant patients. The deal calls for €700 million (about $797 million) in payments, with closing expected in the third quarter, and focuses narrowly on the potravitug program. Potravitug has fast-track designation in the U.S. and orphan-drug designation in the EU. In Memo’s phase 2 study, the antibody suppressed viral load and resolved biopsy-proven nephropathy in a significant number of patients, with no serious side effects reported. Ipsen said the totality of evidence supports initiating a pivotal phase 2/3 trial later this year. For transplant-focused biotech and rare-disease investors, the acquisition underscores continuing partner-and-buy strategy around viral infections with few approved targeted therapies.
