Thermo Fisher Scientific said it received approval from the FBI’s National DNA Index System (NDIS) for its Applied Biosystems RapidIntel Plus cartridge for rapid DNA profiling. The cartridge, used with the Applied Biosystems RapidHit ID system, enables qualifying forensic crime scene samples to generate DNA profiles that can be searched against CODIS when FBI requirements are met. Thermo Fisher said the rapid workflow is intended for accredited forensic laboratories and law enforcement agencies operating under FBI requirements and quality standards, with qualified personnel reviewing and interpreting results before national database searches or uploads. The development is aimed at reducing investigative timelines from days or weeks to hours, potentially increasing early lead generation while complementing existing forensic laboratory protocols rather than replacing them.
