University of Maryland’s Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health reported interim phase 1 data for a dual vaccine targeting both Lassa fever and rabies, combining inactivated rabies virus-vector strategies with Lassa virus antigens. The study found the candidate was safe and induced immune responses against both pathogens. With no licensed Lassa fever vaccine and Lassa recognized as a priority by the World Health Organization, the trial’s early immunogenicity data support continued clinical development if efficacy is confirmed. The update also reflects the operational logic of combo vaccines for regions where both diseases contribute substantial morbidity and mortality, including severe outcomes in pregnancy.
