Sapphiros won a $12.4 million award from HHS’s Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) to develop rapid molecular diagnostics for biothreats and emerging infectious diseases. The funding supports a 24-month effort focused on point-of-care and decentralized use, built around Sapphiros’ proprietary molecular platform. The company plans to integrate a single-use capillary blood collection system developed by Satio—continuing a collaboration that previously supported a patch-based diagnostic project for Ebola under BARDA funding. Sapphiros previously reported work toward an over-the-counter respiratory virus antigen test, positioning the company across multiple tiers of emergency diagnostics. The award highlights BARDA’s continued emphasis on translating platform-based molecular tools into deployable field workflows, including sample collection systems designed for rapid use outside central labs. For the biotech diagnostics sector, the deal reinforces how government funding can be a decisive catalyst for scaling testing capabilities that are difficult to commercialize on purely commercial timelines.
