Saudi Arabia’s national biotechnology strategy has moved from a policy target toward operational partnerships, according to reporting on agreements announced at the Riyadh Global Medical Biotechnology Summit. The strategy, launched in January 2024, targets $34.6 billion contribution to non-oil GDP by 2040 and 11,000 jobs by 2030. Key deals include KAIMRC expanding research capabilities with Thermo Fisher Scientific on a Center of Excellence for Genomics, Proteomics and Biobanking, plus collaborations with Olink, Tiziana Life Sciences, and Chiyoda on proteomics, immunomodulation/neuroimmunology, and plant-based peptide production for cancer treatment. On the clinical side, the University Hospitals Program at Council of Universities’ Affairs signed with Novo Nordisk to build trial capability including earlier-phase studies. The report also highlighted vaccine manufacturing scale-up, with Vaccine Industrial Company stating its human vaccine facility in Sudair Industrial City is 85% complete and designed to localize up to 80% of essential vaccine needs.
