Gilead reported positive Phase 2 results for emvistegrast, delivering higher clinical response rates than placebo in moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis in the SWIFT trial. In the highest-dose cohort, 66% of patients achieved clinical response versus 37% with placebo, and the study met its primary endpoint on nominal significance. The results set up Phase 3 planning and also support additional development in Crohn’s disease and potential combination studies, with Gilead framing emvistegrast as a competitive oral option within the a4β7 integrin class. For competitors and payers, the key operational question will be dosing strategy, durability of response, and where an oral integrin blocker lands relative to established biologic administration routes.
